Check GTFOBins before giving up on a binary

Before you write a custom exploit, check whether a binary you already have access to can be turned against the system. A permitted sudo entry or a stray SUID bit on something like find, tar, or vim is frequently a direct path to root.

bash
sudo -l
find / -perm -4000 -type f 2>/dev/null

Cross reference anything you find with GTFOBins. Half of Linux privilege escalation is knowing that a tool has a documented escape and remembering to look.
